Summer: What is life without colour?
Welcome to Year 3—where creativity and curiosity take centre stage! This term, children will explore the theme of colour and perspective through an enquiry-based approach, developing their skills in Art, Science, and Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education (PSHE). Through hands-on experiences, reflection, and creative projects, they will investigate the question: What is life without colour?
Enquiry-Based Learning
Children will explore how colour shapes our world and emotions. They will examine different artistic perspectives, investigate the science of light and shadow, and reflect on how change affects their emotional well-being as they grow.
Creative Explorations: Learning Through Art
🎨 Exploring Light, Shadow, and Colour
Children will study how art elements such as shading, proportion, and colour impact an image.
They will explore different grades of pencil to create texture, atmosphere, and shadow in their artwork.
Inspired by L.S. Lowry and Georgia O’Keeffe, they will investigate how artists see the world differently and use colour to evoke emotions.
Children will compare and contrast different pieces of art, discussing what they like and how they might improve their own work.
Sketchbooks will be used as a learning journey to experiment, reflect, and develop artistic skills.
Science Explorations: Understanding Light and Shadow
☀️ Exploring Light and Colour
Children will investigate how light and dark affect the way objects are seen.
They will experiment with reflection and shading to understand how light moves and changes.
Hands-on investigations will allow them to explore how colours appear in different lighting conditions.
PSHE: The Light and Dark of Growing Up
💡 Understanding Emotions and Change
Children will explore how emotions can be influenced by different experiences and changes in their lives.
They will discuss strategies to stay happy, safe, and resilient as they grow.
Lessons will encourage reflection on the ‘light and dark’ of life and how they can navigate challenges with confidence.
Authentic Outcome: Art Gallery Presentation
🖼️ Showcasing Learning Through a Community Art Gallery
Children will present their artwork in an interactive gallery, where parents and the community can experience their learning.
A QR code audio tour will allow visitors to listen to children explain their creative processes and inspirations.
Social Legacy: Giving Back to the Community
💛 Bringing Art to Others
Children will create framed A5 artwork to gift to a local care home, sharing their creativity and bringing joy to others.
Children will personally deliver these pieces, fostering a connection between generations through art.
Year 3 Enquiry mat
English
A high-quality text drives each of our enquiries and the texts are used to give knowledge and purpose to the enquiry. High quality texts can only be accessed through knowledge of vocabulary in different tiers. Explicit teaching of new vocabulary and using the classroom environment to showcase key vocabulary helps us to infuse rich and sophisticated vocabulary from EYFS to Year 6. The texts are used as a stimulus for both English and cross curricular writing, ensuring high expectations of our children. Reading is interwoven into all aspects of the enquiry to encourage reading and language development and promote reading for pleasure.

Maths
In maths, we follow the Power Maths programme to support children’s learning and to build a deep understanding of maths concepts. Power Maths is a curriculum mastery programme designed to spark curiosity and excitement and nurture confidence in maths. It is built around a child‑centred lesson design that models and embeds a growth mindset approach to maths.
This term we are covering the following:
Decimals
- Understanding and comparing decimal numbers up to two decimal places.
- Rounding decimals to the nearest whole number.
- Adding and subtracting decimals with the same number of decimal places.
- Solving real-life problems involving money and measurement using decimals.
Measurement: Money
- Converting between pounds (£) and pence (p).
- Adding and subtracting money amounts using both £ and p.
- Solving word problems involving money, including finding totals, calculating change, and comparing amounts.
Time

- Calculating durations and solving time problems involving start and end times.
- Converting between different units of time (e.g., seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years).
- Understanding and solving problems involving time intervals and schedules.
Statistics
- Interpreting and presenting data using bar charts, pictograms, and line graphs.
- Solving problems using data from tables and graphs, including drawing conclusions and making comparisons.
