Autumn: Are we all the same but different too?
Our Enquiry
This Autumn, our Foundation 2 children will embark on an exciting journey to discover the world around them and explore their place in it. Through hands-on activities, stories, and exploration, they will learn all about their own town and the wider world beyond!
Exploring Our Town and Beyond
- Children will begin by investigating the town they live in, identifying its key features, and locating it on a map of the UK.
- They'll discover that while many of us may live in the same town, others might come from different towns, and each has its own special features.
- We'll then zoom out and explore different countries, with a special focus on Peru, to compare what makes our town unique and how it’s similar or different to places far away.
Tasting the World!
- As we explore, we’ll dive into the foods and animals you might find both in the UK and Peru, learning how different cultures bring delicious and exciting flavours to life!
- Children will have the chance to taste new foods, talk about the animals they learn about, and understand how different environments shape what grows and lives there.
Belonging and Emotions (PSHE)
- We’ll also be talking about who we are, where we belong, and what makes each of us special and unique.
- Children will begin to understand and articulate their own feelings as well as recognise the feelings of others, helping them respond thoughtfully in different situations.
- Together, we’ll explore how we are all part of our classroom community and how we can care for and respect one another.
Discovering Plants and Animals (Science)
- In our nature adventures, children will explore the unique animals and plants found in different parts of the UK, discovering how nature varies from place to place.
- We’ll learn about local wildlife and plants, encouraging curiosity about the natural world and an appreciation for the environment around us.
This term will be a time for our Foundation 2 children to build a strong sense of identity, connection, and understanding as they explore their town, their country, and the world beyond!
F2 Enquiry Knowledge mat
English
A high-quality text drives each of our enquiries and the texts are used to give knowledge and purpose to the enquiry. High quality texts can only be accessed through knowledge of vocabulary in different tiers. Explicit teaching of new vocabulary and using the classroom environment to showcase key vocabulary helps us to infuse rich and sophisticated vocabulary from EYFS to Year 6. The texts are used as a stimulus for both English and cross curricular writing, ensuring high expectations of our children. Reading is interwoven into all aspects of the enquiry to encourage reading and language development and promote reading for pleasure.
Key Texts
Phonics
At Leamington Primary School we follow the Little Wandle programme for phonics in EYFS and KS1. We understand the impact of teaching good phonics enables children to become fluent readers in KS1, so they are able to continue to access learning in KS2.
All phonics lessons throughout the school follow the same structure of 'revisit/review, teach, practice and apply'. Children are encouraged to use the correct vocabulary, please see the glossary below for the words that are used when teaching phonics.
In Foundation 2, children are taught phonics daily in a 20 minute whole class session. There are phonics resources and enhanced activities available for the children to access both inside the classroom and in the outdoor provision. All children in Foundation 2 will have completed Phases 2, 3 and 4 by the end of the year so they are ready to start Year 1. The links below provide appropriate resources for phonics.
Maths
In maths we follow the Power Maths programme to support children’s learning and to build a deep understanding of maths concepts. Power Maths is a curriculum mastery programme designed to spark curiosity and excitement and nurture confidence in maths. It is built around a child‑centred lesson design that models and embeds a growth mindset approach to maths.
