A high-quality text drives each of our enquiries and the texts are used to give knowledge and purpose to the enquiry. High quality texts can only be accessed through knowledge of vocabulary in different tiers. Explicit teaching of new vocabulary and using the classroom environment to showcase key vocabulary helps us to infuse rich and sophisticated vocabulary from EYFS to Year 6. The texts are used as a stimulus for both English and cross curricular writing, ensuring high expectations of our children. Reading is interweaved into all aspects of the enquiry to encourage reading and language development and promote reading for pleasure.
This is one of the WW1 poems that we will be studying in Year 6 this half term. It was written by a serving soldier Wilfred Owen. He used to include poems and drawings in letters back home to his Mother.
He began to write poems that told the truth about the horrors he saw rather than the adventure that war was painted to be by the Governmnet's propoganda posters.
He sadly was killed in action on 4th November 1918 while attempting to lead his men across the Sambre canal at Ors. The news of his death reached his parents on 11 November, Armistice Day - the day when the war was declared over.
