Reading Culture at Leamington

Reading is fundamental.

At Leamington, we are passionate about nurturing a strong reading culture that inspires a lifelong love of books. Reading is at the heart of our curriculum, with high-quality texts carefully chosen to enrich our enquiries and deepen children’s understanding of the world around them. Each class enjoys a shared novel that not only promotes a love of storytelling, but also celebrates diversity, empathy, and different perspectives, helping our children see themselves and others in the stories they read. We ensure that all reading materials are age-appropriate, engaging, and matched to the children’s reading levels, so that every learner is supported and challenged. Through rich, varied, and meaningful reading experiences, we aim to develop confident, curious, and thoughtful readers.

Our class novels

At Leamington, we are passionate about fostering a love of reading. Each class shares high-quality novels throughout the year, carefully chosen to engage children, broaden their horizons, and build empathy and understanding. These shared texts become a central part of our classroom culture, creating a sense of community through story.

We dedicate time every day to reading together. This daily practice includes time for book talk, where children can share their thoughts, make predictions, and explore themes and characters in depth. Staff also use this time to model fluent and expressive reading, demonstrate comprehension strategies, and inspire a genuine enthusiasm for literature.

Our commitment to daily shared reading supports language development, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of books.
